As summer begins to come to a close and you know fall weather is right around the corner, your first instinct is probably to make sure your furnace is ready to go. While this is important, you shouldn’t forget about your air conditioner either.

Preparing your furnace and air conditioner for colder temperatures are equally important, so you have the peace of mind knowing that both units will be ready when you need them.

Preparing Your Furnace for Fall & Winter

Though your furnace may be the last thing on your mind in the summer, you can’t neglect your furnace for months and expect it to perform well as soon as colder weather hits. Before temperatures drop, take these steps to make sure your furnace is ready to heat your home again:

  1. Schedule services – It’s recommended to schedule annual furnace maintenance services to ensure that your unit is ready for fall. Call in a professional and see if anything needs to be replaced or repaired. Scheduling an appointment to have your furnace cleaned is also smart. Have this done early on in the season, or before cold weather comes, so your unit is ready.
  2. Replace air filters if needed – Furnace filters should be replaced once every two to three months. Even during the summer when your unit isn’t in use, you should still have your filters checked and replaced frequently.
  3. Check your thermostat – Make sure you have a functioning thermostat. If your thermostat isn’t working properly, there’s a chance that your heating system may not be either.
  4. Inspect the burners – Dust can accumulate on your burners during the summer, so it’s important to clean them and check for signs of rust.
  5. Look at your chimney – Clear out things that may be blocking your chimney, such as birds’ nests or debris. If your chimney hasn’t been inspected in a while, it’s important to call in a professional.
  6. Double check heating vents – Make sure your heating vents are completely open and aren’t covered. When furniture is moved during the year and new items are brought in a home, there’s a chance that something may be blocking one of your vents.

Fall Air Conditioner Maintenance

Just because warmer temperatures are in the past doesn’t mean you can forget about your air conditioner in the fall. In order for your AC to work properly when summer rolls around again, you need to be proactive before colder weather comes.

Here are the steps you should take to prepare your air conditioner for fall:

  1. Use a garden hose to rinse out the inside of your outdoor unit. Be sure to remove bugs, dirt, and dust in the process. Clear out the leaves and twigs that have gathered in or around the unit as well.
  2. Locate the lid of your electrical circuit. Once you’ve done this, remove the lid and flip the switch to turn off your power supply. This prevents your air conditioner from turning on during a warmer day in the fall or winter. If that happened, water could potentially freeze inside your unit overnight and damage it.
  3. Install rubber pipe insulation or tubular foam to prevent your unit from freezing.
  4. Cover your unit with a waterproof air conditioner cover.
  5. Throughout the colder months, be sure to remove ice, snow, and debris that may gather on the top of your air conditioner. Continue to clear off leaves and debris from around or under your unit as well.
