- Use a garden hose to rinse out the inside of your outdoor unit. Be sure to remove bugs, dirt, and dust in the process. Clear out the leaves and twigs that have gathered in or around the unit as well.
- Locate the lid of your electrical circuit. Once you’ve done this, remove the lid and flip the switch to turn off your power supply. This prevents your air conditioner from turning on during a warmer day in the fall or winter. If that happened, water could potentially freeze inside your unit overnight and damage it.
- Install rubber pipe insulation or tubular foam to prevent your unit from freezing.
- Cover your unit with a waterproof air conditioner cover.
- Throughout the colder months, be sure to remove ice, snow, and debris that may gather on the top of your air conditioner. Continue to clear off leaves and debris from around or under your unit as well.
