7 Common HVAC Problems

HVAC issues are a cause of frustration for any homeowner. Whether you’re not getting sufficient airflow from your vents or notice a musty smell when you turn on your HVAC system, the team at Bovio Rubino Service can help find a long-lasting and efficient solution.

Our comprehensive HVAC services cover a wide range of issues, from the everyday to the emergencies. Keep reading to learn about 7 common problems South Jersey homeowners experience with their heating and cooling systems.

  1. Poor Heating & Cooling Distribution

When you experience inconsistent temperatures in your home and certain rooms are always too hot or cold, there’s a good chance the culprit is actually not your HVAC—but your ductwork. Leaky or improperly sized ducts can lead to a variety of comfort issues and energy waste.

The team at Bovio Rubino Service can help find a solution to make sure everyone in your home stays comfortable with either our HVAC zoning services or installation of a ductless mini split for supplemental heating and cooling.

  1. Loud Noises

Strange sounds coming from your HVAC system should never go ignored as they can be a sign of leaks or other serious malfunctions. Here are some of the most common noises an HVAC will make and what problems they can indicate:

  • Hissing – This can mean a refrigerant leak in your AC or a punctured duct
  • Squealing or screeching – This usually means that a belt within your HVAC needs to be replaced
  • Buzzing and clicking – This can indicate a compressor issue and should get inspected as soon as possible

Bovio Rubino Service can help identify the source of strange sounds coming from your HVAC and help get your system up and running again with our heating and cooling repair services.

  1. Mildew & Mold Buildup

Mold and mildew thrive in the damp and dark areas of your home, making your HVAC system susceptible to its growth. Some signs to look for to determine if mildew is present in your HVAC or your duct system include musty smells, condensation, or leaks, as well as allergy symptoms like sneezing or a runny nose.

If your HVAC or duct system has grown mildew, call the experts at Bovio Rubino Service. Our team can determine the severity of the problem and solve it with duct cleaning and other indoor air quality services.

  1. Poor Insulation & Air Leaks

Insulation and air sealing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when your HVAC is having issues, but they have more of an impact than you might think. In fact, upgrading your home’s insulation and sealing gaps and cracks can significantly reduce your energy waste and save around 20% of your heating and cooling costs!

With a home energy audit from Bovio Rubino Service, we can pinpoint exactly where your home is wasting energy through poor insulation and air leaks. We can then help improve your whole home performance with our insulation and air sealing services.

  1. Malfunctioning Thermostat

When your heating and cooling systems are constantly running without reaching your desired temperatures, your thermostat could be to blame.

Make sure to always check batteries and your system settings before calling for professional HVAC repairs—but in the case your thermostat is broken, Bovio Rubino Service is there to help. We can install a new, smart thermostat with programmable settings that save you money on your energy costs.

  1. Dirty Air Filter

Dirty air filters are one of the most common causes for a wide variety of HVAC issues—from poor airflow to frozen evaporator coils. Your system’s air filter should be changed every 30-90 days, but may need it more often if your household is sensitive to allergens, you have pets, or have older HVAC equipment. The team at Bovio Rubino Service will check your air filters during our annual tune-ups!

  1. Lack of Maintenance

Regular maintenance is the most important thing you can do to keep your HVAC running efficiently for years to come. Whether you have a furnace, traditional air conditioner, or a high-efficiency heat pump, maintenance visits at least once a year are crucial to its operation.

You can get peace of mind by enrolling in our Maintenance Protection Plans! We offer 4 different levels of plans in order to fit any budget, all of which come with several benefits to your HVAC, such as:

  • Improved performance
  • Longer service life
  • Less need for repairs

Through a Competitive Application Process South Jersey Rising Juniors and Seniors Selected for Exposure to Careers, Entrepreneurship and Wellness

The Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference takes place on Wednesday, July 15 at the HVAC and Plumbing Services company’s headquarters in Voorhees.

The 13 South Jersey young women selected to attend the Conference are all rising juniors and seniors at local high schools. They completed applications and were chosen through a competitive process. At the Conference they will gain exposure to career paths, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, problem solving and mind and body wellness. A community service project benefitting Cathedral Kitchen in Camden is also planned.

Subject matter experts presenting at the Young Women’s Leadership Conference in addition to Hines include CEO of ACCU Staffing Elaine M. Damm, Senior Investment Manager at Aberdeen plc Zoe McCormick, Jennifer Nagle, Vice President of External Affairs and Special Projects, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Senior Product Manager at SimpliSafe Molly Nugiel, Founder of Higher Minds Laura Rubino and Dr. Barbara Winfield, owner of Family Practice Associates of Voorhees.

After being named one of the top 12 Women in HVAC in America in 2025 by ACHR News, Hines made advancing young women the Bovio Rubino Service community case for 2026. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) women made up 1.5 percent of HVAC mechanics and installers in 2021. Even fewer women own and run HVAC and Plumbing service companies independently. Hines had few women role models coming up in the business.

“I want to give young women every opportunity for success as they advance in life, both in their careers and as citizens,” Hines, a Mom of two daughters in college and high school, said. “As the owner of a thriving, independent, family-owned business in South Jersey, it’s my way of paying it forward. We are very busy designing the Conference ensuring it will have high impact on the young women in attendance.”

The Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference is the program highlight of the HVAC and Plumbing Service company’s 2026 community cause “LeadHERship in ’26” which advances opportunities for young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.
