Everything You Need to Know About Winterizing Your Furnace

Is there anything worse than your heat shutting off on the coldest day of the year? A heating system breakdown in the middle of winter can put your family in an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situation. That’s why it’s so important to winterize your furnace. Getting your heating system ready for cold weather reduces the risk of breakdowns and keeps your furnace running efficiently all winter long.

Bovio Rubino Service is here to help you prepare your South Jersey heating system for winter with a simple guide to furnace maintenance from the local heating pros that know home heating like nobody’s business!

Why Do You Need to Winterize Your Furnace?

Just like your car needs its six-month service to keep running properly, your furnace needs an annual tune-up. Scheduling your tune-up in the fall or early winter gives you a chance to address heating repairs before temperatures drop too low.

There are many benefits to winter furnace maintenance, including:

  • Better efficiency and potentially lower energy bills
  • Less risk of emergency breakdowns and expensive heating repairs
  • Longer-lasting equipment
  • Peace of mind knowing your heating system will make it through winter

How Often Do You Need to Get Your Furnace Serviced?

It’s best to have your furnace professionally serviced once a year. If someone in your household has allergies or a respiratory condition like asthma, more frequent HVAC maintenance might be necessary to keep your indoor air quality as high as possible. If your equipment is 10 years old or older, you may also need more frequent furnace maintenance. The heating pros at Bovio Rubino Service can recommend the best maintenance schedule for your HVAC system.

How to Get Your Furnace Ready for Winter

There are a few things you should do to get your furnace ready for winter:

Clean or Replace Your Filters

Your filter removes contaminants from your air as it passes through your heating system. As it collects contaminants, your filter will get clogged. When your filter is clogged, it’s harder for your furnace to push air through, which can impact performance and drive up your energy costs. Plus, a clogged filter is bad for your indoor air quality.

Check Your Thermostat

Your thermostat is just as important as your furnace when it comes to heating your home. At the start of the winter, you should make sure your thermostat has fresh batteries and is set to heating mode. You might even want to think about installing a smart or programmable thermostat to help you minimize wasted energy and reduce high winter heating costs.

Schedule Furnace Maintenance

The most important thing to do when getting your furnace ready for winter is to schedule professional heating maintenance. Your HVAC technician will clean and inspect your furnace, looking for any loose parts or other small issues that could easily snowball into major problems if they’re not fixed early.

Bovio Rubino Service offers maintenance protection plans to make furnace maintenance easy and stress-free for Voorhees, Cherry Hill, and Medford homeowners. We offer bronze, silver, gold, and platinum plans, so you can choose the option that fits your needs the best. All of our maintenance plans include service reminders so you won’t ever have to think about scheduling HVAC maintenance again—we’ll let you know when it’s time for a tune-up. South Jersey Rising Junior and Senior High School Young Women are Encouraged to Apply

Voorhees, New Jersey – April 1, 2026 – Young women going into their junior and senior years of high school who are thinking about their futures are encouraged to apply to attend the 2026 Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference on Wednesday, July 15 in Voorhees.

The application to attend the Young Women’s Leadership Conference is now live and available through Friday, May 1 by midnight. The Conference is part of “LeadHERship in ’26,” this year’s Bovio Rubino Service community cause which “seeks to advance the opportunities of young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.”

Speakers, workshops and discussions are part of the one-day Conference in July. The opportunity to present an original idea that betters the community after the Conference will be presented to the Conference attendees.

Investing in young women is an idea close to the heart of Bovio Rubino Service president Angela Rubino Hines, a Mom of two young women and a leader amongst very few women in the HVAC and Plumbing service industry. In 2025 Hines was named one of the country’s “Top 12 Women in HVAC” by ACHR News. While she’s humble about the success she has achieved it inspires her to encourage the next generation of women leaders.

“We look forward to investing in young women this year at our Conference, through creative programs with our team members and through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. ‘LeadHERship in ’26’ is our way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of women leaders right here in South Jersey where we live and where our customers live.”
