How Long Does an HVAC System Last?

Your heating and cooling systems are responsible for keeping you comfortable throughout the year, making them some of the most important pieces of equipment in your New Jersey home. But how often do you need to replace your furnace, boiler, air conditioner, or heat pump?

At Bovio Rubino Service, we’ve been helping South Jersey homeowners with their HVAC needs since 1974 and we’ve seen just about every make and model. There are several factors that can affect the lifespan of your system, most importantly installation and maintenance. Keep reading to learn why.

The Lifespans of Different HVAC Systems

The acronym “HVAC” refers to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning—which can include several pieces of home equipment. Each of these systems operate differently and have different lifespans. Here is what you can generally expect from common types of heating and cooling systems:

  • Air Conditioners – 10-15 years
  • Furnaces – 15-20 years
  • Heat Pumps – 10-15 years
  • Boilers – 15-20 years

The good news is that with a family-made local company like Bovio Rubino, you can hit the high end or even exceed the average life expectancy for the equipment in your home!

Proper HVAC Installation Matters

Heating and cooling installation is a complex process that involves correct unit sizing, drainage, exhausts, and in many cases ductwork. When your system is improperly installed, its efficiency, safety, and life expectancy can all be diminished. At Bovio Rubino Service, our technicians are expertly trained and hold several certifications to ensure your HVAC installation goes right the first time.

HVAC Maintenance: The Key to a Long-Lasting System

The best way to keep your HVAC system running smoothly and extend its lifespan is regular maintenance visits from a professional HVAC technician. Lack of maintenance can contribute to unnecessary wear and tear along with issues such as:

High Energy Bills

Even if your system is running “fine” without preventative maintenance, it won’t be operating as efficiently as it could be. When your HVAC system isn’t properly maintained and cleaned, dust and dirt can accumulate, reducing efficiency and leading to higher energy bills.

Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

Your HVAC system distributes air throughout your home, but if it’s not properly maintained it can also circulate mold spores, dust, or other pollutants. Regularly changing your air filter every 30-60 days will help keep pollutants out of your breathing air. During a Bovio Rubino tune-up visit, we’ll change your air filter as well as inspect your HVAC and ductwork for condensation that can lead to IAQ problems.

Frequent & Costly Repairs

One of the most beneficial parts of preventative maintenance is the early detection of any operational trouble. If minor issues are left untreated, they can quickly grow into bigger problems that require expensive heating and cooling repair

Regular maintenance can add 5-10 years of reliable operation to your heating and cooling system, especially when you’re starting with a brand-new unit. For South Jersey homeowners who’ve lost track of their heating and cooling maintenance in the past, Bovio Rubino Service offers peace of mind and convenience for any budget with our Maintenance Protection Plans. Through a Competitive Application Process South Jersey Rising Juniors and Seniors Selected for Exposure to Careers, Entrepreneurship and Wellness

The Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference takes place on Wednesday, July 15 at the HVAC and Plumbing Services company’s headquarters in Voorhees.

The 13 South Jersey young women selected to attend the Conference are all rising juniors and seniors at local high schools. They completed applications and were chosen through a competitive process. At the Conference they will gain exposure to career paths, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, problem solving and mind and body wellness. A community service project benefitting Cathedral Kitchen in Camden is also planned.

Subject matter experts presenting at the Young Women’s Leadership Conference in addition to Hines include CEO of ACCU Staffing Elaine M. Damm, Senior Investment Manager at Aberdeen plc Zoe McCormick, Jennifer Nagle, Vice President of External Affairs and Special Projects, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Senior Product Manager at SimpliSafe Molly Nugiel, Founder of Higher Minds Laura Rubino and Dr. Barbara Winfield, owner of Family Practice Associates of Voorhees.

After being named one of the top 12 Women in HVAC in America in 2025 by ACHR News, Hines made advancing young women the Bovio Rubino Service community case for 2026. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) women made up 1.5 percent of HVAC mechanics and installers in 2021. Even fewer women own and run HVAC and Plumbing service companies independently. Hines had few women role models coming up in the business.

“I want to give young women every opportunity for success as they advance in life, both in their careers and as citizens,” Hines, a Mom of two daughters in college and high school, said. “As the owner of a thriving, independent, family-owned business in South Jersey, it’s my way of paying it forward. We are very busy designing the Conference ensuring it will have high impact on the young women in attendance.”

The Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference is the program highlight of the HVAC and Plumbing Service company’s 2026 community cause “LeadHERship in ’26” which advances opportunities for young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.
