How to Improve Indoor Air Quality Before Allergy Season Hits

As spring approaches in New Jersey, allergy sufferers know what's coming: pollen, dust, and other allergens that can make life miserable. While outdoor allergens are unavoidable, you can take steps to improve your home's indoor air quality and create a healthier, more comfortable living space. Here are some practical tips to prepare your home before allergy season arrives.

1. Replace Your HVAC Filters

Your HVAC system's air filter plays a crucial role in capturing dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne irritants. During allergy season, a clean filter is essential to prevent these particles from circulating throughout your home.

For optimal results, replace your filter at least every 60-90 days — or more frequently if you have pets or family members with allergies. Consider upgrading to a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which is designed to trap even the smallest allergens for superior air quality.

2. Schedule an HVAC Maintenance Service

Routine HVAC maintenance not only improves system efficiency but also helps maintain cleaner indoor air. A professional technician will clean your system’s coils, ducts, and vents, removing built-up dust and debris that could otherwise circulate through your home.

Spring is the ideal time to schedule this service so your system is prepared to handle warmer weather while delivering cleaner air.

3. Invest in an Air Purifier

Air purifiers are highly effective at reducing indoor allergens such as pollen, mold spores, and pet dander. For whole-home protection, consider a system that integrates with your HVAC unit. Portable air purifiers are also a great option for bedrooms or high-traffic areas where allergens tend to accumulate.

Look for purifiers equipped with HEPA filters or UV light technology, which can destroy airborne bacteria and viruses in addition to allergens.

4. Control Indoor Humidity

Excess moisture can encourage mold growth and dust mites — both of which can aggravate allergy symptoms. Keeping indoor humidity levels between 30-50% is ideal for reducing these triggers.

Consider investing in a dehumidifier to help maintain proper humidity levels, especially in damp areas like basements or bathrooms. Your HVAC system may also have built-in humidity control features that can improve comfort and air quality.

5. Clean Your Ductwork

Over time, dust, mold spores, and other allergens can accumulate in your air ducts, diminishing indoor air quality. A professional duct cleaning service can remove these contaminants, improving airflow and reducing allergen circulation.

Duct cleaning is particularly important if you've recently completed home renovations, experienced water damage, or noticed excessive dust buildup around your vents.

6. Keep Windows and Doors Closed

While spring's mild temperatures may tempt you to open your windows, doing so invites pollen and other outdoor allergens inside. Keep windows and doors closed during peak pollen hours and use your HVAC system to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature instead.

If you enjoy fresh air, consider installing screens designed to filter pollen and dust from incoming air.

7. Maintain a Regular Cleaning Routine

A clean home is a healthier home during allergy season. Dust surfaces frequently using a damp cloth to trap particles instead of dispersing them. Vacuum carpets and upholstery with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter, and regularly wash bedding, curtains, and other fabrics to reduce allergen buildup.

Final Thoughts

Taking proactive steps now can help you breathe easier when allergy season arrives. By replacing filters, maintaining your HVAC system, and incorporating air quality solutions, you can create a cleaner, healthier home.

South Jersey Rising Junior and Senior High School Young Women are Encouraged to Apply

Voorhees, New Jersey – April 1, 2026 – Young women going into their junior and senior years of high school who are thinking about their futures are encouraged to apply to attend the 2026 Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference on Wednesday, July 15 in Voorhees.

The application to attend the Young Women’s Leadership Conference is now live and available through Friday, May 1 by midnight. The Conference is part of “LeadHERship in ’26,” this year’s Bovio Rubino Service community cause which “seeks to advance the opportunities of young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.”

Speakers, workshops and discussions are part of the one-day Conference in July. The opportunity to present an original idea that betters the community after the Conference will be presented to the Conference attendees.

Investing in young women is an idea close to the heart of Bovio Rubino Service president Angela Rubino Hines, a Mom of two young women and a leader amongst very few women in the HVAC and Plumbing service industry. In 2025 Hines was named one of the country’s “Top 12 Women in HVAC” by ACHR News. While she’s humble about the success she has achieved it inspires her to encourage the next generation of women leaders.

“We look forward to investing in young women this year at our Conference, through creative programs with our team members and through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. ‘LeadHERship in ’26’ is our way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of women leaders right here in South Jersey where we live and where our customers live.”
