Can I Do AC Repairs Myself?

When Should I Replace My AC?
While some AC issues have simple fixes, others require specialized knowledge, tools, and safety precautions. Electrical components, refrigerant handling, and system diagnostics involve complexities that can be dangerous for someone without proper training. Mistakes can lead to more costly repairs or even damage the unit beyond repair.

Before deciding to take on AC repairs, homeowners should evaluate their skills, the type of problem, and whether they have the necessary tools. Simple maintenance tasks like changing filters or cleaning coils are manageable, but electrical repairs, refrigerant refills, and compressor issues often require professional service. Understanding what’s safe to tackle and when to call an expert helps prevent further complications.

Common AC Issues That Require Professional Repair

Some air conditioning problems extend beyond basic maintenance and require expert attention. Electrical issues, such as a malfunctioning capacitor or faulty wiring, pose serious safety risks. AC units use high-voltage electricity, and attempting repairs without the right knowledge can lead to injury or fire hazards.

Refrigerant leaks also demand professional service. Handling refrigerant requires certification due to environmental regulations and health risks. A low refrigerant level not only reduces cooling efficiency but also signals a leak that needs sealing before recharging the system.

Compressor failures are another major concern. The compressor is the heart of an AC system, and diagnosing its issues involves specialized tools. Replacing it incorrectly can damage other components, making professional intervention the best option.

Basic Maintenance That Most Homeowners Can Handle

Some AC maintenance tasks don’t require technical expertise and can improve system efficiency. Changing the air filter is one of the easiest yet most important tasks. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder and increasing energy costs. Replacing it every one to three months keeps the unit running smoothly.

Cleaning the condenser coils is another way to maintain performance. Over time, dirt and debris accumulate on the outdoor unit’s coils, reducing efficiency. Turning off the power and using a garden hose or coil cleaner removes buildup and helps the system cool more effectively.

The Risks of DIY AC Repairs

Attempting complex AC repairs without experience can create more problems than solutions. Incorrect fixes may lead to higher energy bills, further system damage, or even total failure. For example, using the wrong refrigerant or overcharging the system can harm the compressor, leading to expensive replacements.

Safety is another major consideration. AC units contain electrical components that can cause shocks or fires if mishandled. Refrigerant exposure can lead to health issues, including dizziness and respiratory problems. Without the proper training and equipment, these risks increase significantly.

Voiding a manufacturer’s warranty is another consequence of DIY repairs. Many warranties require professional service for major issues. If a homeowner attempts repairs and damages the unit, the manufacturer may refuse to cover the costs of future repairs or replacements.

South Jersey Rising Junior and Senior High School Young Women are Encouraged to Apply

Voorhees, New Jersey – April 1, 2026 – Young women going into their junior and senior years of high school who are thinking about their futures are encouraged to apply to attend the 2026 Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference on Wednesday, July 15 in Voorhees.

The application to attend the Young Women’s Leadership Conference is now live and available through Friday, May 1 by midnight. The Conference is part of “LeadHERship in ’26,” this year’s Bovio Rubino Service community cause which “seeks to advance the opportunities of young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.”

Speakers, workshops and discussions are part of the one-day Conference in July. The opportunity to present an original idea that betters the community after the Conference will be presented to the Conference attendees.

Investing in young women is an idea close to the heart of Bovio Rubino Service president Angela Rubino Hines, a Mom of two young women and a leader amongst very few women in the HVAC and Plumbing service industry. In 2025 Hines was named one of the country’s “Top 12 Women in HVAC” by ACHR News. While she’s humble about the success she has achieved it inspires her to encourage the next generation of women leaders.

“We look forward to investing in young women this year at our Conference, through creative programs with our team members and through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. ‘LeadHERship in ’26’ is our way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of women leaders right here in South Jersey where we live and where our customers live.”
