5 HVAC Noises You Shouldn’t Ignore

What’s that noise? If it’s coming from your heating or cooling system, it’s probably something you shouldn’t ignore. The dependable like nobody’s business HVAC pros at Bovio Rubino Service respond to plenty of heating service calls this time of year as furnaces and heat pumps are turned on. Some noises have innocuous reasons, but others signal a serious problem that should get immediate attention. Here’s a guide to five common HVAC noises and possible causes:

Banging

Banging sounds coming from your furnace when it starts up can be quite unsettling! The culprit is often dirty or neglected furnace burners which can cause inadequate or delayed ignition. Gas can build up before igniting, causing a loud noise from a small explosion that can damage the heat exchanger. Furnace maintenance service from the professional HVAC team at Bovio Rubino includes cleaning the burner to avoid this issue.

Banging can also be from duct expansion, the noise your metal ductwork makes when expanding and contracting from heating up and cooling down. This can be the result of:

  • A clogged air filter
  • Closed vents
  • Undersized ducts
  • Poorly installed or poor quality ductwork

Loose parts or loose engine mounts can also cause loud noises and require immediate attention by a service technician.

Squealing

That sharp squeal or whining noise from your furnace is worth looking into as it may point to a deteriorating blower belt, a failing fan motor, or bearings that require lubrication. A quick service call from your friendly Bovio Rubino technician can pinpoint the problem and make a quick furnace repair.

Loud Metal-on-Metal Scraping

If your furnace sounds like a train with loud scraping sounds, pay attention! This is one serious symptom that requires immediate attention. Shut the furnace off when this sound is detected. This sound usually indicates one of three problems with your furnace blower wheel:

  1. The blower wheel is loosened from the shaft and scraping against the blower casing. If caught early, before the wheel becomes damaged, your Bovio Rubino technician can easily tighten the wheel.
  2. The blower wheel is broken and needs to be replaced.
  3. The motor mount has broken, allowing the blower assembly to fall and hit the housing.

If this sounds familiar to you, contact your helpful Bovio Rubino customer service representative and schedule a heating service appointment promptly!

Clicking or Hissing Noises

These more subtle noises can also indicate a furnace service call is needed. Clicking could indicate an electrical problem or a faulty flame sensor. If you’re hearing a hissing sound—even when the furnace or heat pump is off—it could indicate a refrigerant leak, an internal valve leak, or an over-pressurized compressor.

Humming or Buzzing Sounds

A buzzing sound can be signs of a wide range of issues with your heating system. These noises could indicate loose parts, debris, a loose fan motor, a dirty air filter, or an out-of-balance motor. A loud humming noise from your furnace could mean loose parts or the motor is failing. The louder the sound is, the more important it is to schedule a service call promptly.

Exposure to Careers, Entrepreneurship, Community Betterment and Personal Wellness

South Jersey Rising Junior and Senior High School Young Women are Encouraged to Apply

Voorhees, New Jersey – April 1, 2026 – Young women going into their junior and senior years of high school who are thinking about their futures are encouraged to apply to attend the 2026 Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference on Wednesday, July 15 in Voorhees.

The application to attend the Young Women’s Leadership Conference is now live and available through Friday, May 1 by midnight. The Conference is part of “LeadHERship in ’26,” this year’s Bovio Rubino Service community cause which “seeks to advance the opportunities of young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.”

Speakers, workshops and discussions are part of the one-day Conference in July. The opportunity to present an original idea that betters the community after the Conference will be presented to the Conference attendees.

Investing in young women is an idea close to the heart of Bovio Rubino Service president Angela Rubino Hines, a Mom of two young women and a leader amongst very few women in the HVAC and Plumbing service industry. In 2025 Hines was named one of the country’s “Top 12 Women in HVAC” by ACHR News. While she’s humble about the success she has achieved it inspires her to encourage the next generation of women leaders.

“We look forward to investing in young women this year at our Conference, through creative programs with our team members and through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. ‘LeadHERship in ’26’ is our way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of women leaders right here in South Jersey where we live and where our customers live.”
