When Should I Replace My Water Heater?

When Should I Replace My Water Heater?

A water heater is one of the most essential appliances in a home, but it doesn’t last forever. Over time, wear and tear can cause efficiency to decline, leading to higher energy bills, inconsistent water temperatures, or complete system failure. Knowing when to replace a water heater can prevent unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.

Many people don’t think about their water heater until something goes wrong. While minor issues can often be fixed, there comes a point when repairs no longer make financial sense. Recognizing the signs of an aging or failing water heater can help homeowners make an informed decision about replacement.

Waiting too long to replace a water heater can lead to serious consequences, such as leaks that cause water damage or a complete lack of hot water. By understanding the warning signs and considering factors like age, efficiency, and repair costs, homeowners can avoid inconvenience and ensure their home has a reliable hot water supply.

Signs Your Water Heater Needs Replacement

A failing water heater often shows warning signs before it stops working completely. Recognizing these early indicators can help prevent unexpected breakdowns, water damage, and higher utility bills.

If any of the following issues occur, it may be time to consider a replacement:

  • Inconsistent water temperature – If the water fluctuates between hot and cold or doesn’t get as hot as it used to, the heating elements or thermostat may be failing.
  • Rusty or discolored water – Brown or reddish water coming from the hot tap can indicate internal tank corrosion, which eventually leads to leaks.
  • Rust around the top - Rust around the top of a water heater by the exhaust pipe is a sign the water heater is back drafting and is a safety issue
  • Unusual noises – Rumbling, popping, or banging sounds from the tank often result from sediment buildup, which reduces efficiency and can cause damage over time.
  • Leaks around the base – Any pooling water or moisture around the tank suggests a crack or faulty valve, both of which signal the need for replacement.
  • Frequent repairs – If the unit requires repeated service, the cost of repairs may outweigh the benefits of keeping an aging system.

Ignoring these signs can lead to more serious problems, including total system failure or water damage to surrounding areas. Replacing the unit before it fails ensures a steady hot water supply and prevents costly emergency repairs.

How Long Does a Water Heater Last?

Most traditional tank water heaters last between eight and 12 years, while tankless models can operate for 20 years or more. The exact lifespan depends on factors such as water quality, maintenance, and usage patterns. Hard water can shorten a water heater’s lifespan due to mineral buildup, while regular flushing and maintenance can help extend it.

The age of the water heater is an important factor when deciding whether to repair or replace it. If a unit is approaching or past its expected lifespan and experiencing problems, replacement is usually more cost-effective than continued repairs. Checking the manufacturer’s label on the unit can provide a clear indication of how old it is.

Even if an older water heater appears to be functioning, it may not be operating efficiently. Newer models are designed to use less energy, which can lead to noticeable savings on utility bills. Upgrading to a high efficiency model also has tax incentives and utility rebates. Make sure to ask Bovio Rubino Service if your unit would quality and how to get these incentives.

Voorhees, New Jersey – April 1, 2026 – Young women going into their junior and senior years of high school who are thinking about their futures are encouraged to apply to attend the 2026 Bovio Rubino Service Young Women’s Leadership Conference on Wednesday, July 15 in Voorhees.

The application to attend the Young Women’s Leadership Conference is now live and available through Friday, May 1 by midnight. The Conference is part of “LeadHERship in ’26,” this year’s Bovio Rubino Service community cause which “seeks to advance the opportunities of young women through career readiness, entrepreneurship, community betterment and a personal health and wellness mindset.”

Speakers, workshops and discussions are part of the one-day Conference in July. The opportunity to present an original idea that betters the community after the Conference will be presented to the Conference attendees.

Investing in young women is an idea close to the heart of Bovio Rubino Service president Angela Rubino Hines, a Mom of two young women and a leader amongst very few women in the HVAC and Plumbing service industry. In 2025 Hines was named one of the country’s “Top 12 Women in HVAC” by ACHR News. While she’s humble about the success she has achieved it inspires her to encourage the next generation of women leaders.

“We look forward to investing in young women this year at our Conference, through creative programs with our team members and through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. ‘LeadHERship in ’26’ is our way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of women leaders right here in South Jersey where we live and where our customers live.”
